Book Review: Q&A

Author – Vikas Swarup

Publisher – Black Swan 2006

Rating – 4.5/5

Many of you may know this book without even realising it as it was the inspiration behind the hit film, slumdog millionaire.

Ram Mohammad Thomas has just got twelve questions correct on a TV quiz-show to win a cool one billion rupees which will change his life beyond all recognition from his childhood on the streets.

This book is written in stages that are related to the money that Ram is trying to win. Whilst answering the questions, Ram tells us about his incredible adventures whilst living in the streets and how this gave him the answers to the all important questions. From orphanages to brothels, gangsters to beggar-masters, and into the homes of Bollywood’s rich and famous. Ram’s story is brimming with the chaotic comedy, heart-stopping tragedy and tear-inducing events of India.

But he is brutally slung in prison on suspicion of cheating. Because how can a kid from the slums know who Shakespeare was, unless he is pulling a fast one?

“The slums are not places of despair, it’s inhabitants are all working towards a better life.”

Have you read the book? Have you seen the film? Which did you prefer?
